Heavy rains and flooding along Bear Creek caused significant erosion and damage to the Bear Creek Greenway Trail. Jackson County received a funding commitment from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to repair the trail and prevent further damage. Jackson County retained OBEC to develop design solutions, project plans, and environmental permitting for the repair.
Below a pedestrian bridge, the creek had scoured beneath the abutment at the east end, undermining the approach trail section. The OBEC team filled the scour pocket with riprap. The team also installed four fish-passage-compliant in-stream flow control structures of large woody debris anchored upstream from the bridge opening to redirect the stream. Other elements of the design solution included installation of boulders, erosion control matting, and restoration planting.
