The Heceta Head Lighthouse is a popular historic destination along Oregon's scenic coastal highway just north of Florence. The existing access to the state park from the highway required a dangerous at-grade left turn with limited site distance, posing a safety hazard to the public, especially during peak summer tourist season when hundreds of travelers make this stop each day.
OBEC's team provided survey, design, and construction services for a new 1,225-foot-long access road on steep terrain allowing right turns only to access the park for both northbound and southbound travellers. The new road passes under the approach spans of the existing Cape Creek Bridge, allowing visitors a unique perspective to view this historic Conde B. McCullough arch bridge.
The scope included a new overflow parking area, water quality features to treat the increased impervious surface area, environmental documentation, and traffic and interpretive signing.
