Sunnyside Road

Sunnyside Road is a heavily used urbanized rural road that serves the developing community of Sunnyside, providing a vital connection to I-205 and the surrounding Portland suburbs.
The existing roadway could no longer handle the community's growing traffic needs, so this extensive restoration and improvement project expanded the under-performing two- to three-lane road into a five- to seven-lane major arterial street.
These considerable improvements included new sidewalks, curb, and gutter; new traffic signals; and the construction of new bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and soundwalls.
Environmental concerns were important on this project, given the presence of wetlands along the route. The project also involved creating suitable fish and riparian habitat as mitigation for project impacts, including replacing a culvert on a stream to provide passage and habitat for endangered fish species.
