Larry Fox, PE
Larry got his start in engineering in California, but he was drawn to Oregon in 1990 due to his love of nature and because he learned of the innovative bridges being designed by a small engineering firm in Eugene. He quickly rose in the ranks at OBEC and ultimately found himself leading some of the company’s largest and most complex projects, including the I-5 Willamette River Bridge in Eugene — an enormous milestone project both for the company and for Oregon. As president since 2012, Larry leads the company with an emphasis on technical excellence, client service, collaboration and open communication.
Guy Hakanson, PE
Guy grew his love of engineering and construction services by working in a gravel-crushing company in the small town of Oakland, Oregon. Seeing how infrastructure projects began, literally from the ground up, inspired him to return to school and get his engineering degree. He started at OBEC in 1987 as an onsite construction engineer. One of his most memorable projects was the rehabilitation of the historic Ferry Street Bridge in Eugene – a major connector across the Willamette River in the heart of the bustling college city. Throughout his career, Guy has had the good fortune to work across all technical disciplines at OBEC, which has helped him understand what it takes to make a successful project. Now, as vice president, Guy provides constructability reviews, quality assurance and control, and technical leadership and support to the company.
Austin’s admiration of ecology and natural resources began at a young age when he spent countless hours exploring the woods, fields and wetlands surrounding his home in the foothills of the southern Willamette Valley. This respect for nature, combined with growing up building artisan homes and barns with his father, taught him the correlation between infrastructure and the natural environment. As the Environmental Division Manager, Austin works to ensure OBEC’s sustainable development practices respect this connection between the natural and built environment.
Bob Goodrich, PE
Before coming to OBEC in 2004, Bob was a bridge designer for the Oregon Department of Transportation – an experience that enabled him to quickly become a leader amongst our team of talented bridge designers. He has worked on a wide range of bridge projects but in recent years has managed some of OBEC’s most unique and high-profile projects, including historic bridge rehabilitations, accelerated bridge construction, and seismic retrofits and assessments. Most recently, Bob led the design team for the Peter Courtney Minto Island Bridge, a new signature bicycle and pedestrian bridge that connects downtown Salem, OR, to a large natural area across the Willamette Slough.
Jason Kelly, PE
Jason is a lifelong Oregon native; he graduated from Canby Union High School and attended Oregon State University, where he graduated with a double major in Civil and Forest Engineering. Jason began his career at OBEC in 2002 as a survey intern, and by late 2004 started performing in-service bridge inspections in the inspection group. Over the last 12 years, Jason has moved up through the ranks of the inspection division and assumed leadership of the group in 2016. He has worked on complex bridge, heavy civil and roadway projects all over the northwest in addition to managing the in-service safety inspection of over 500 bridges annually. Jason relocated from the corporate office in Eugene to the Lake Oswego branch office in 2009 and has managed the Lake Oswego branch office since 2015.
Jaime Jordan, PE
Medford Office Manager
Jaime has seen both sides of the public infrastructure table, working as a private consultant and for the Oregon Department of Transportation early in her career. A southern Oregon native, Jaime has focused her civil engineering expertise on providing excellent design to the hearty infrastructure of the climate-varied region, from highways and trails to irrigation canals and pipelines. In 2015, she became the office manager of the Medford office, supporting the survey, design, and inspection staff and diverse regional clients.
Jeff Bernardo, PE
With OBEC since 1997, Jeff began his career working in the field with the survey crews and field inspectors, gaining valuable, real-world application of design principles. He then spent several years focused on designing before taking on project management responsibilities. In 2000, Jeff helped open OBEC’s Medford office and cultivated lasting relationships with the public agencies in the southern region of the state. While there, he managed roadway, trail, and bridge projects in conjunction with the office’s survey and inspection services. In 2015, Jeff moved back to his hometown of Eugene to lead the company’s Roadway division and mentor the next generation of OBEC leadership.
Nick Robertson, PE, SE
Seismic analysis and retrofit design have been a primary area of focus for Nick since he first started studying advanced seismic analysis as a graduate student at Stanford University. Since becoming the leader of OBEC’s structural division in 2012, Nick has helped improve the region’s seismic resiliency through a diverse set of projects that include both new construction and the retrofit of existing water, wastewater, hydroelectric and transportation infrastructure.
Jim Colton, PLS
Jim was drawn to surveying because he enjoyed the outdoors and was interested in history. He joined OBEC in 2003 as a project surveyor and rose to survey group manager, where he managed the field and office staff under supervision of the survey division manager. Jim became survey division manager in 2009. Surveying technology has changed significantly since his first surveying job as a chainman in 1974, and these changes in technology have kept Jim interested in his field. Recently, Jim led OBEC’s efforts to begin 3D laser scanning, which we used on the Peter Courtney Minto Island Bridge project in Salem, Oregon. OBEC’s survey team was involved in this complex bridge project from the original design survey through construction staking.
