I-5: Fern Valley Interchange
This project reconstructed an urban freeway interchange into the state’s first “diverging diamond” configuration, which allowed higher traffic capacity with minimal right of way incursion. OBEC provided inspection for the construction of roadway, bridge, retaining walls, foundations, signals, illumination, signing, and PCC and ACC paving.
There is a local high school about two blocks from the site, and students normally passed through the site on their route to and from school. OBEC helped create designated routes that steered students around the construction. The finished project received praise for a safe construction site and a high-quality finished product that has already reduced congestion and improved traffic flow at the well-traveled interchange.

- The team designed temporary, protected pathways to and from a relocated bus stop that received wide usage throughout the day.
- OBEC also diligently maintained routes for vehicle access to businesses to help them remain profitable during construction.
